No dia 31 de agosto de 1951, quando seu pai saída de casa, rumo ao trabalho, o mal elemento surgiu-lhe à frente, com um revólver. Disparou e deixou-o caído ao chão, esvaindo-se em sangue.
Coronel e a sua irmã mais velha, Maria José, estavam no portão da casa e nem tiveram tempo de gritar para o pai se proteger. Levou dois balaços no coração.
Quando o homem caía, Coronel o amparou nos braços. O atirador, então, o baleou, quando tinha 15 de idade e tombou sobre o corpo da irmã. “Só escapei porque eu era um garoto muito forte, fisicamente”, contou Coronel à Revista do Esporte Nº43, de 2 de janeiro de 1960.
Coronel foi batizado e registrado por Evanil Silva e ganhou tal apelido porque era um líder nos times em que jogava. Foi quem mais substituiu o grande Nílton Santos (considerado o melhor lateral-esquerdo da história do futebol) na Seleção Brasileira.

Colonel was baptized and registered as Evanil Silva and earned such nickname because he was a leader in the teams in which he played. He was the one who replaced the great Nílton Santos (considered the best left-back in soccer history) in the Brazilian National Team.
