DOMINGO É DIA DE MULHER BONITA - AS ESPIÃS QUE SABIAM DEMAIS - 6

 Pelo mesmo período em que Elsbeth Schragmueller começou a servir à inteligência alemã (ver capítulo 5, em 09.10.16)), a inglesas Edith Cavel, que trabalhava em um hospital da invadida capital belga (Bruxelas), seguiu em seu posto, que passou para a Cruz Vermelha socorrer soldados feridos da França, Inglaterra e da Bélgica.

 Edith passou a espionar para um grupo clandestino belga que trabalhava com a inteligência britânica. Para tirar prisioneiros da Bélgica e fazê-los chegar à neutra Holanda, ela falsificava documentos. Conseguiu ajudar na libertação de centenas de prisioneiros, quando um traidor de dentro do seu grupo a denunciou aos alemães. Presa, ela admitiu, orgulhosamente, a acusação e foi fuzilada, em outubro de 1915.    

Para o britânico Conselho de Propaganda de Guerra, Edith era um anjo inocente, vitimado pela brutalidade alemã. Ela rondava pelos 50 anos de idade, mas artistas desenharam para a propaganda britânica uma jovem e linda mulher amarrada a um tronco, cercada por sorridentes executores que iriam exterminá-la. Mais uma espiã virava lenda.
