30 de maio e 17 de junho - , o time canarinho fez dois amistosos com o País de
Gales, vencendo-o pelo mesmo placar, de 3 x 1, nos dias 12 e 16, com um jogo no
Maracanã e o outro no Pacaembu-SP.
Como o clima entre os torcedores era “só de bi” – que viria –, a
revista “O Cruzeiro” datada de 2 de junho – Ano 34 e Nº 34 – usou uma
enorme capa dobrada, com foto de Ronaldo Moraes, mostrando o time entrando em
campo, no estádio paulista. Ao fundo da parte dobrada, mandava um recado a
Pelé, fotografado por Luiz Carlos Barreto, recebendo flores.
Dizia o texto que os treinos do selecionado nacional pareciam
mostrar Pelé, que chamava de Rei, “começando a deixar-se ofuscar pela
glória, pretendendo ver em cada companheiro um súdito e, nas
arquibancadas,apenas a plebe”. Advertia a revista: “Isso é o que todos tememos
e não desejamos”. E recomendava: “Que Pelé volte a se o menino de boa estrela,
e não a estrela”. Finalizando, sugeria-o lembrar das vaias dos últimos treinos
e aproveitar "para voltar a ser o filho de Dondinho, enquanto tudo são
flores”.
