O repórter enviado para a cobertura, Elias Nasser, apurou que a obra, iniciada em 1949, fora orçada em Cr$ 12 milhões de cruzeiros (então uma grande bagatela), e o seu editor escreveu uma frase que agradou muito à torcida cruzmaltina: "Agora, mais do que nunca, vascaíno até debaixo dágua" – sempre!
