Revelado pelo XV de Novembro de Piracicaba, Paulinho desembarcou em São Januário após voltar da Tunísia com a medalha de bronze do Mundial Sub-20, em 1977, pela Seleção Brasileira. Fez cinco jogos e marcou dois gols: nos 2 x 0 Itália (03.07.1977) e nos 4 x 0 Uruguai (09.03.1977) – as outras partidas foram Brasil 5 x 1 Irã (27.08.1977); 1 x 1 Costa do Marfim (30.06.1977) e 1 x 1 (5 x 3 pênaltis) México (06.07.1977).

O time: Carlos; Mauro (Carlos Alberto Barbosa), Rondinelli, Edinho e Pedrinho; Batista, Adílio e Guina (Tita); Paulinho (ZéSérgio), Juari e Zezé.
Depois do Vasco, Paulinho ainda defendeu o Palmeiras, por seis jogos e três tentos; o Grêmio-RS, por 12 veze e um gol, e, por fim, de 1983 a 1989, o Comercial, de Ribeirão Preto-SP.
