Esta é uma das mais bonitas histórias do esporte carioca. Pela metade da década-1950, o Bangu decidiu disputar as provas dos campeonato estaduais-RJ de natação. Os adversários não levaram a sério, achando que aqueles meninos e meninas suburbanos nem sabiam nadar direito. Afinal, viviam longe do mar e, em Bangu, só havia uma piscina, a que o clube construíra para o treinador Paulo Luz trabalhar aquela patotinha.
E não foi que os banguenses surpreenderam os grandes clubes cariocas? Tornaram-se bicampeões estaduais infanto-juvenil, vencendo oito provas, contra três do segundo colocado. E mais: andaram perto de baterem vários recordes da categoria. Para o Nº 19 da revista "Manchete Esportiva", que circulou em março de 1956, foi o "feito mais notável da nossa vida esportiva nos últimos tempos".
